Cafayate – North Argentina’s iconic wine village

Cafayate is a picturesque town in northwestern Argentina, located about 1,700 meters above sea level. With around 12,000 inhabitants, Cafayate is primarily known for its first-class wines and offers a welcome break from the hectic backpacker lifestyle. In addition to the renowned wineries, there are numerous other attractions in the vicinity of Cafayate that make a visit worthwhile.

Wines in Cafayate: A Paradise for Wine Lovers

Cafayate is one of the highest wine regions in Argentina, which gives the wines of the region their special quality. The cool nights ensure that the acidity in the grapes is preserved, leading to fresh and balanced wines. At the same time, the intense sunlight promotes the development of strong aromas and vibrant colors. Many bodegas in Cafayate rely on traditional winemaking techniques and sustainable farming methods, which gives the wines an exceptional quality.

Torrontés:
Torrontés is the most famous wine from Cafayate and is considered one of the best white wines in Argentina. This wine is known for its intense floral aroma and fresh, fruity notes. The scent of roses, citrus fruits, and exotic spices is unmistakable. The Torrontés from Cafayate is lively and balanced, making it an ideal companion for light dishes and tapas.

Malbec:
In addition to Torrontés, Malbec is also very popular in Cafayate. Malbec wines from this region are characterized by their deep red color and strong, full-bodied taste. They are rich in aromas of dark berries, chocolate, and spices. The cool nights and high altitude of Cafayate give these wines impressive depth and complexity.

The Best Bodegas in Cafayate

Cafayate offers a variety of bodegas to discover. Here are some of the best wineries we can recommend. Note that many bodegas close at midday or are located outside the town center. If you want to dine at a bodega, it is essential to make a reservation in advance during the high season.

El Porvenir:
El Porvenir is one of the most renowned wineries in Cafayate. The bodega is known for its excellent Malbec and Torrontés wines. A tour offers deep insights into the work of the winemakers, and a wine tasting at El Porvenir is an absolute must. The bodega is centrally located in town, making the visit especially convenient. However, you should check and reserve tour and tasting times in advance online, especially if you want to join an English-speaking tour. You can do so here.

Finca las Nubes:
Finca las Nubes is located a little outside of Cafayate but offers a spectacular view over the surrounding vineyards. This bodega is ideal for an afternoon wine tasting accompanied by a light snack. The dishes are perfect for sharing; however, for a full dinner, we would prefer other bodegas. The atmosphere amidst the vineyards makes the visit an unforgettable experience.

Finca El Esteco:
Located just outside Cafayate, Bodega El Esteco offers elegant wines and an upscale restaurant that is definitely worth a visit. Here, you can enjoy fine cuisine in a stylish setting. Again, it is advisable to reserve a table in advance to ensure you get a spot at this popular winery.
